Ibadan, the biggest city in Nigeria is the capital of Oyo state that has 4.2% Nigerian partitioned areas to proudly call local governments in Oyo state.
In school, the list of state and capital in Nigeria became an area of concentration, for the simplest and shortest primary school test to even job interview computer based tests.
But before then, it was popular knowledge to our ancestors that regions existed before the emergence of local governments.
From multiplication, or should I say re productivity of four regions from a founding number of three, a propagation that metamorphosed to 36 states and capital in Nigeria; without an exclusion of Oyo state.
The division of the country into “politically autonomous states” as chambers defined partitioning, that is a trait or feature not exclusive to the segmented 36 states but also to these states resulting to local governments and wards in each segments.
Oyo state, one of the triplets we know belonging to the south west region, is a partitioned state consisting of 33 local governments and 600 wards.
Oyo State Government Profile and Overview

Prior to what Oyo state is now, it was reputed to be an empire, Oyo empire to be precise and ruled during the 1650s to middle 1700.
Oyo was said to be ‘the most important and authoritative of all the Yoruba land. Oduduwa, the father of Yorubas, the great ancestor of our land founded Oyo on one of his migration trips.
His son soon ruled over Oyo as the first ruler ever had in Oyo, hence the title, Alaafin of Oyo (iku baba yeye).
Thanks to Alaafin Orompoto who transformed the considered minor state, but famous trading center, then to a military fortified empire.
Alaafin Abiodun was hell bent on building a stronger economy and turned deaf ears and blind eyes to other sectors, little did he know the built reputation was waning.
Constant fights between the Iyalode, Otunba, Balogun, and other chiefs continued in the chamber, without a future of settlement, until they heard a cry of ‘ogun wo lu o’.
The fulanis, one of the ethnic groups in Nigeria had invaded, the people who could run ran further to the south with whatever history they could and the name, Oyo; which we proudly call Oyo state today.
Oyo state government also comprise of the executive, legislative, and judiciary arm of government, dancing to the tune of the Nigerian government structure.
