There comes a time in the life of every eligible Nigerian graduate to observe the mandatory National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) in any assigned NYSC Camp in the country.
The NYSC programme, with a duration of one year, was established with a view to promoting national unity and developing Nigerian Youths to become great and dynamic Nigerians.
Interestingly, before every graduate makes it to NYSC camp there’s a lot of excitement and they’re always like, Oh God, let this day come! Here are about 9 more interesting things about prospective corps members that we’ve put together.
The commencement of the programme requires all eligible graduates to be camped in a place known as NYSC orientation camp in order to prepare the graduates for the task ahead.
The NYSC camp is a training ground meant to help train and equip Nigerian graduates for the task ahead and also for life after school.
However, the NYSC camp has proven to be place where Nigerian youths are made or broken. (I have been through the programme, so, I can speak about it with some degree of certainty).
This article is titled “21 days in NYSC Camp can make or break you”. I am quite sure nobody is proud of a youth who has gone to NYSC camp and comes out dented.
Therefore, I would love to write about those things that are needed to make you as you start your “otondo” journey in NYSC camp.
Important Things You Need to Know In Order Not to Be Broken In NYSC Camp
A good friend of mine, Oke Steve – Co-founder of Oasdom.com once told me that Knowledge is not power but the application of knowledge is what brings about power.
Larry Burkett said Information without application leads to frustration. Information is power when it is acted upon. As a result of this, I would admonish you to go beyond reading this article but apply what you read.
Below are great 3 weapons you need to add to your arsenal before going to NYSC orientation camp.
PURPOSE: The Compass that Gives Your Life Direction
Dr. Myles Munroe of blessed memory said and I quote “If the purpose of a thing is not known, abuse is inevitable”. As a prospective corp member, you need to understand your purpose in life and also understand the purpose of going to NYSC camp.
Before going to camp, you should be able to reply, with some degree of certainty, to the simple questions, “Why am I going to the NYSC camp? How will I invest my time? What are those things I will engage in? What will become of me after 21 days in Nysc camp?”
Not knowing one’s purpose and being focused in achieving that purpose has even contributed to frustrated graduates spitting out 5 common statements of regret after their first degree.
The subject of purpose has been a puzzle to many. This is because we typically begin at the wrong starting point – Ourselves. Discovering purpose for ourselves and for any adventure requires a good knowledge of the creator’s intent.
The easiest way to discover the purpose of an invention is to ask the creator for it. To understand your purpose, ask your creator. To understand the purpose of NYSC camp, get to understand the rationale behind NYSC programme.
It is worthy to note that you are gonna meet diverse people; some living a purpose-driven life and some living without purpose. You are gonna meet some persons that are wise while some will be otherwise.

You are gonna meet some that are “destination-conscious” while others might be moving with “anywhere belle face” mentality. However, Purpose gives your life direction and direction guarantees your glorious destination.
On purpose, let this be your watchword: If you do not know where you are going, anywhere will look like it. Understand the purpose of your stay in NYSC camp so that you won’t end anywhere after camp.

ASSOCIATION, A Place to Belong
History has no record of solitary champions isolated from other great minds. While you may claim to have a private life, living in isolation negates the law of creation.

Rick Warren said something that interest me. He said-Even in the perfect, sinless environment of Eden, God said, “It is not good for a man to be alone.”
It is a known fact that living without associating is not healthy. However, you determine people you associate with. Remember, Friendship is not by force, it is a choice. Choose your friends in NYSC camp based on your destination.
Let me bring to the fore the biblical story of Daniel, Meshach, Shadrach and Abednego. These guys formed a clique because they were of like minds. This perhaps is the greatest story I have read about association.
Note that when Daniel was promoted, he told the king about the other guys in his clique and they were promoted as well (see Daniel 1:6 and Daniel 2:46-49). This story reveals that your association probably determines where you find yourself at the end.

From my own personal experience, let me list the categories of people you need to avoid in NYSC camp amongst others:
- Time wasters
- Careless individuals
- Negative people
On association, let this be your watchword: You cannot associate with vultures and command the dignity of an Eagle.
DECISIONS, A Strong Channel of Strength
Anthony Robbins said something profound. He said and I quote “I believe that it’s in your moments of decision that your destiny is shaped.”
Listen to this, Decisions act as channels through which both problems and great opportunities comes to a man. Decisions have both positive and negative outcomes.
Anthony Robbins said “Your life changes the moment you make a new, congruent, and committed decisions.” It is interesting to know that decision making is simple and at the same time powerful.
We all make decisions every day. As such, it is expected of you to make decisions in NYSC camp but before you make such decisions, know that it is your decisions and not your conditions that determine the results you see.
[Tweet “It is your decisions and not your conditions that determine the results you see.”]
There is something special about making decisions. Decisions are made privately but the outcomes are made public.
As such, the outcomes people see will make them understand the kind of decisions you have taken-either positive or negative. Therefore, decide now to always make good, positive and committed decisions in NYSC camp and beyond.
Let me give you few decisions, amongst others you can make in NYSC camp and even after camp
- Decide to be positively different because if you are not different, you may not be needed.
- Decide to associate with positive people.
- Decide to imbibe the positive virtues the orientation camp has to offer.
- Decide how you will make the most of your service year.
- Decide the next phase of your life after service. Do not finish your service year and start singing the anthem “After service, what next?”

Now, do not just make decisions, act on those decisions. A wise man said that a real decision is measured by the fact that you have taken a new action.
If there is no action, you have not truly decided. Also, stay committed to your decisions, but you need to be flexible in your approach.
On decision, let this be your watchword: “One good or bad decision can make or break me”
21 Days In Nysc Camp Can Make or Break You (Summary)
21 days in NYSC camp can truly make or break you but you need to realize that everyone is absolutely responsible for the outcome of his or her life.
What a thing of joy if after 21 days in camp, you are made better because a better person is always a thing of joy to behold. However, it is impossible to be made without conscious application of what you have read.
Imagine what it is going to be like after NYSC, you look back with a joyful smile and you say, “I lived with purpose, I made positive decisions and associated with the right minds and it was worth it”. I bet you will be proud of yourself.
NYSC camp is fun. Service year is a great period and super fantastic if you creative lasting positive memories. I wish you all the very best. Remain Relevant!
