A Boost Mobile cell phone store in Paterson, NJ was attacked by two armed robbers last week, but thanks to a quick-thinking manager they didn’t get away with much.

Manager Tommy Torrez was alone in the store when the two suspects walked in the door and brandished a gun at him, demanding money and high-priced gadgets. He gave into their demands before sneaking into the back while they were rummaging through the cash register. There he was able to escape into a neighboring travel agency before running around to the front of the store. Someone had slammed the metal security gate shut so he locked it, trapping the thieves inside.

Then the hilarity begins. Watch the end of the video above as the robbers struggle to escape in any way they can, trying to pry open the door, smash it open, and eventually pleading with the ever-growing crowd of people outside to open the gates.

Rather than open the gates the onlookers pulled out their cell phones and laughed at the trapped criminals, posting videos to Instagram and mocking them.

Sadly, the criminals eventually wised up and realized that escaping out the front was futile, breaking out of a side window by knocking off the metal cage with a wrench they found in a tool box. They were able to do so thanks to an atrocious police response time, which an internal affairs investigation is stating was due to police not knowing the robbers were armed. The manager estimates it took the police more than an hour to respond, more than enough time to let them escape. Some of the 20 witnesses to the crime tried to grab the suspects when they did emerge but one of them pulled out a knife and they were able to escape.

While the suspects came in with their faces covered their disguises were soon abandoned, so hopefully someone will be able to identify them thanks to the numerous videos available online. In their haste the thieves only managed to take $115, leaving behind a bag with bullets and hypodermic needles, a broken front door, and lots of laughter on the internet.
